Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Baptism or Christening?

They’re the same!

What is it?

  • Baptism or Christening is the sacrament by which God adopts us as his children and we come into the life of the Church.

  • In Baptism, a person is made one in Christ through the mystical washing of sin, symbolised in the use of water.

  • Baptism is about commitment to follow Jesus and his teaching.

  • Baptism is a commitment to a way of life, and is not a right.

What about Godparents?

  • Godparents; or SPONSORS, sponsor the baptismal candidate into the Church.

  • For that reason, they need to be baptised members of the Church. Traditionally, it is two of the same sex, one of the other. The minimum required is one.

  • Choose well - don’t choose because of what they might do for your child; but rather, for the example and encouragement they will give.

  • Godparents DO NOT take custody of the children if something should happen. This is something you need to work out in your will.

What is required?

The Parish will journey with the family. This will require interaction with the Vicar, and a dedicated team of people in the Parish who will pray, visit and encourage you as you move towards the day. There is no fee for baptism - this is our privilege, and cannot be bought!

When does it happen?

Preferably, during one of the main services - either Saturday 6.30 PM or Sunday 9.30 AM, or by arrangement. Baptisms are a public commitment to joining the Church - members of the Church will need to be present.

What if I don’t wish to make that sort of commitment?

The Church also offers a dedication and blessing service. This can be undertaken at home or in the Church. Please ask if you wish to explore this further.

Is a blessing service or a service by a civil celebrant the same as a Baptism or Christening?

No. Baptism or Christening is becoming a member of the Church.

How to begin?
